Founders
Alessandro Gelmi
Alessandro Gelmi is an Albus Dumbledore of curriculum. He has a Ph.D. in Educational Philosophy, and his central obsession is turning Kieran Egan’s radical insights into something teachers can actually use. He’s one of the world’s foremost researchers on Egan’s work, and serves on the academic council of CIRCE. He lives in the autonomous province of South Tyrol in northern Italy, where he’s worked with hundreds of teachers to help them rediscover what they love about teaching.
Brandon Hendrickson
Brandon Hendrickson is a delightful person at parties. He’s the founder of Science is WEIRD and the homeschooling dad to a 16-year-old engineer, a 13-year-old storyteller, and a 3-year-old madwoman. Once, he ate an ant on a dare. His internet claim to fame is that he won the Astral Codex Ten book review contest with his review of Kieran Egan’s The Educated Mind. He writes the substack The Lost Tools of Learning, and lives in Rochester, Minnesota.
Teachers
Aaron Abernathy, econ
Aaron’s a quant. He’s an economics graduate student and former financial modeler. He runs unparalleledtutoring.com where he guides high school students (neurospicy and neurotypical alike) through maddening math, science, and SAT problems. He’s been described as “brilliant”, “empathetic”, and “funny”. He once worked in a refugee camp in Malawi. At the moment, he’s in Sri Lanka, working with an international business to help forward environmental sustainability and social goals. He’ll be teaching Econ is Weird from various spots in Thailand and exotic Missouri.
Emma Baker, history
Emma is a storyteller. She’s worked as an actor, a dramaturg (the person who gives historical context to the cast), an elementary school tutor, and and ESL tutor. She teaches Reading Comics and Arguing Comics at Science is WEIRD. She currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she’s currently trying to break her record for most museums visited in one day (four). She’s teaching History is Weird.
